Your VU+DUO weak signal problem ??? well this is probably your answer.

with the help of a user on another place who may well be a member on here too, I can't say L.O.L, you can guess, it is figured out that the weak signal fault on my sat box is near enough 95% chance likely to be the fault of a blown or semi blown Capacitor "C848" (1000uF/10V/105c) needing replaced on the VU+DUO, Correct or Wrong, whats your opinion ?

So, as I have a perfectly good soldering iron and so on then I thought I would try and replace this cap myself before passing it to someone else to do it if I just cant do it which I probably cant or wont be able to do with shaky hands, you know how that would go, shaky hands and solder irons don't work good, haha.

Anyways, for starters, can someone confirm, the caps, am I right in saying the striped side/leg of the cap is the negative polarity which obviously goes to the minus sign on the motherboard, correct or wrong ? and obviously the other leg would be positive+ going to the + sign on motherboard, correct or wrong ?

Lastly, I am struggling to get nice clear pictures of where exactly this cap is on the motherboard, does anyone have any images of this they can show me or even links to somewhere that does show nice clear pics of it bearing in mind its on a genuine (not a clone) VU+DUO box please ?

Would really appreciate some help here chaps as I dont want things to really go wrong big time.

Cheers. p.s, just waiting a couple of days for some higher quality panasonic ones coming in the post, they were only like £1.40 for 4, so cant complain eh.

And i believe there is also a small chipset next to it that can also fail, and it is usually quit easy to see what one is damaged m8...

yeah mate, cheers, its not the red light one, thats a different cap that has already been replaced couple of years ago and the box isnt stuck on red light now either, touch wood for luck, l.o.l.

its another cap, the one I mentioned in the first post, was just hoping to get some good photos of it from somewhere as any i have seen on the internet are rather fuzzy wuzzy ones and yes I understand they can be quite easily seen with a powerful magnifying glass, try doing all that though and hold a solder iron in another hand, need to be a freekin magician, L.O.L.

Hi.
I have earlier change the cap after get red ring of death.
Now I get very weak signal 12dB on my Duo.
I have tested on another Uno and got very strong signal.
Wich caps should I replace. Some pictures on PM please!!!

other duo owner posted this.

As for the Weak Signal, that was fixed by replacing the C848 cap with a 1000uF 10V 105C one, there were another
few caps next to that too that were swapped out I think with the same caps too, pretty sure it was the same type
and rating of caps but as it wasn't me that done it I would have to ask obviously, but I'm sure it was the same rated caps
that were used.

I would need to see exactly what ones it was that were changed again (from the numbers on the board), certainly there were a few for the weak signal replacing the C848 cap with a 1000uF 10V 105C although its highly likely that just changing the C848 on its own will usually do the job, but there are a couple next to that that can also mess with the signal, but there was another problem that I had to do with the box not starting quite correctly,, it wasn't stuck on red light as such 100% but all the same the symptoms were very similar, so the red light job cap was done again and also a couple caps next to that too, I didnt take notes though and I am not in a hurry to open it and look, I guess correctly changing out all of the caps for a weak signal (there is more than just C848) and while in there and doing it all correctly with the board out just replace all the other ones that have anything to do with the red light problem, again, there are a couple or a few, the main thing though is either chancing a shoddy job or doing it correctly, makes a big difference I would imagine.

PUt it this way, I have the 6 caps in my hand that came out of the box, so you are talking 6 caps in total, not just 1.

OOPS, edit.

How weak does the signal need to be to justify changing these capacitors?
Does this symptom exist using both cable and sat tuners?
Does internet signal effect the SNR levels with this problem?

I ask as I'm having chronic signal issues with a cable tuner
