Glitchy picture, signal too strong or weak?

Hi,

I've managed to make it to this point with the help of this forum, so massive thanks! I have a motorised dish, but since the channels have been disappearing made the switch a mutant hd51, setup with one cable and one satellite tuner, running openatv.

I have vm cable broadband only. There's (AFAIK) a single line that runs in and connects to the superhub.

I've put a 1->2 spliter and then 2no 300mm lengths of rg6 triax, with screw on fittings that I did myself. One to superhub (which is in modem mode) and one to mutant.

I've tried 2no 5-2400mhz splitters, and now a 5-1000mhz splitter, which seems to have made no difference.

Attached are two images from bbc one showing the issues. It's not any worse on encrypted channels. It does seem to get worse when streaming YouTube to ipad etc. Also fast moving images appear to be more glitchy.

If I disconnect the cable from the modem the picture issues largely resolve, but there is no difference in signal strength which is around the high 70's.

Also attached is pics from my modem. The earlier picture is when modem connected directly to original cable. The later picture is when original cable goes to splitter, then to mutant and to modem.

I think I need a booster, but don't want to spend £20and wait a week to find out I'm wrong.

Thanks in advance20180113_101227_024_01.jpg 20180113_100401_033_01.jpg Screenshot_20180113-092838~01~01.png Screenshot_20180113-092634~01.png

What make is your splitter?
5-1000 is the correct one by the way.
RG6 cable is not the greatest choice.
I initially bought this cable and had issues. There is a lot of cheap rg6 cable about that’s not up to standard. I changed to WF100 and it resolved my issues. It looks like a connector or cable issue.
High 70’s signal is what I have on my HD51 and it’s fine.

Is wf100 the same as ft100? Maplins sell it but it looks interchangeable.

I'll get a proper cable cutting tool, crimping tool and connectors.

The splitter is an unbranded one from amazon.

The splitter will probably be the culprit, if there's a Screwfix nearby, nip in and pick up a Labgear one for a few quid

Also if you got a spare hdmi cable laying around try that aswell my son had similar picture interference on his xbox one and it was a dodgy cable etc not that it might this in your case but worth a try :(y):;)

I hope this is not a stupid question but would glitching have anything to do with the ethernet cable you use,i use to have a cat 5 cable going into my box with very little glitching but a few months ago i changed to a cat 7,it was fine for ages then all of a sudden iv'e had glitching,i have the proper splitter box

I can't see it being the cat 5 because either happens for fta channels.

I've tried swapping the hdmi, but will try TV later. I'm pretty sure that the pic off the sat tuner is fine tho, and I'm certain that when playing VOD from plex, that there isn't an issue at all.

I'm awaiting delivery of the splitter. Pinning my hopes on that because otherwise I'm a bit lost beyond change the coax from Rg to wf100.

Is it possible that the brown box outside is configured differently since I've only ever had cable modem here, and never had a TV service?

Failing trying different cable and splitter etc it could be a faulty tuner it does happen from time to time but try the easier and cheaper option of cables and splitter first :(y):

That cable is cheap and nasty air spaced, you need foam spaced cable.

Not saying its deffo at fault, but could be a combination of all these minor things added together.
Cheap cable, dodgy splitter, etc etc

The labgear splitter arrived today, and no better. I'll swing by maplins this week again 2 short lengths of wf100.

I'll also raise a ticket with the supplier of the box, re possibly faulty tuner.

Thanks

So I've done a little more testing, and if I turn the modem off, the glitching disappears.

Is it possible that the signal simply isn't strong enough to support both, and i need a booster rather than changing the webro?
