Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA)

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is a plurilateral treaty that seeks to improve the global enforcement of intellectual property rights through the creation of common enforcement standards and practices and more effective international cooperation.
Counterfeiting and piracy of intellectual property rights is recognised as a global issue. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) estimates that the international trade in goods infringing intellectual property rights accounts for more than $250 billion a year.
ACTA aims to address this by establishing shared international standards on how countries should act against large-scale infringements of intellectual property rights. ACTA will not create new intellectual property rights, laws, or criminal offences in the UK and EU but will provide an international framework that strengthens international enforcement in areas of intellectual property (IP). In addition, ACTA should be consistent with the WTO TRIPS Agreement.

What this means is basically the censorship of the internet. You may think, huh, that's nice, no piracy happening then at all but YOU'RE WRONG. THIS MEANS THE CLOSURE OF SERVICES LIKE WIKIPEDIA AND YOUTUBE!!! THIS IS ALSO DONE BEHIND OUR BACKS, WITH NO MEDIA ATTENTION AT ALL! Ireland agrees to sign the treaty, but the date hasn't been announced yet, why doesn't anyone even bother to talk about it? The sooner we talk about, the sooner we can abolish it. I wonder what's gonna happen in Poland now, since the government agreed to sign this act in three days - expect to hear about riots.

I asked myself the same question i think it was yesterday Gman, one basic response to the literal meaning of the act was going thru customs with your ipod or iphone, having them search it to make sure there was no illegal content and you having to prove you owned it all

I think the internet is an easy target for them. Dial a few numbers and some people are locked up and websites shut down, I think the real task would be for them to deal in counterfeit goods like clothing, handbags electronics and all that. Filesharing is tiny compared to all that. Ever been to ioffer.com? Just a peep in the window of what's out there
