Both have the same GUI and on both you can change the look by applying a skin. The main advantage of ATV is that it's a supported build so over the air updates are safe. OpenATV 5 still in early days though and not too stable yet so for now I'd stick with 4.2. I've posted a backup image on here with instructions. If you still decide to go with VIX use Sucmnsee's (also in the download section), he's done a great job.
