Dublin-born striker Patrick 'Paddy' Madden has joined United from Bohemians today for a two-and-a-half year contract, for an undisclosed fee, that keeps him at Brunton Park until the summer of 2013.

Madden, 20, joined the Gypsies in 2008 and became a regular on the scoresheet as he settled quickly.

He had a loan spell with Shelbourne in 2009 where he notched six goals in 14 appearances and his performances have reportedly generated interest from Celtic, Derby, Millwall and Burnley.

Madden has also received call-ups for the Republic of Ireland U19, U21 and U23 sides.

Greg Abbott said: "Patrick has an excellent reputation and he comes to us highly recommended.

"We've had him watched and he is a striker who likes to be involved, and who can also use the ball. We think he'll fit in with the way that we want to play the game and he has the type of attitude that will make him an asset to the squad.

"He has done well with the Bohs and he sees this is an opportunity to come over here and make a mark. We need players with that drive and hunger. He'll provide competition for places in a key area and, hopefully, he'll also chip in with a few goals. We're really looking forward to working with him."

This transfer remains subject to all of the relevant clearances and permissions, including International, FA and Football League. The player will NOT be available to play in the Tuesday evening game against Huddersfield Town.

Madden will wear squad number 19.
