'Coronation Street's original bad boy Dennis Tanner is set to make a shock return to the cobbles after 43 years.

The ITV soap's official website confirmed today that actor Philip Lowrie will make his comeback later this year.

Dennis, who is the son of Elsie Tanner, appeared in the very first episode of the show back in 1960. He remained in the soap as a regular until 1968, when the character moved to Bristol with his wife.

Despite being mentioned several times during the '70s, his character never returned and his mother Elsie left the show in 1984.

After leaving 'Coronation Street', Philip Lowrie went on to appear in other TV shows including 'Crown Court', 'The Liver Birds' and 'Doctors'. He was also a regular in Victoria Wood's programmes and provided the voiceover for Channel 4's cult quiz 'Fifteen To One'.

The actor will start filming his scenes in March and viewers will see him in April.

Soap bosses are remaining tight-lipped about the storyline that will see him back in Weatherfield.
