The tram travelled for 1km before the driver caught up with it

The driver has been hailed as a hero after he chased the empty tram on a bicycle.

The vehicle, which did not have its brakes on, broke through the tram depot gate and crossed a busy street, travelling on its tracks for a kilometre even though technicians had turned off the power.

The 50-year-old driver, who borrowed the bicycle of a passerby, managed to board the tram and stop it, but had a heart attack after the stress of the incident.

He is not in "immediate danger", a hospital spokeswoman said.

But rail safety inspection spokesman Martin Drapal said they had ruled out defect and it was most likely the driver's human error that led to the tram's getaway in the first place.

He could be put in prison for up to three years if convicted of a serious breach of work duties.
