externally viewing your box - warning

Ok just to correct you dowlinr. First off I did have issues with getting it to work at first but I soon got it up and running and for a short time it worked perfectly OK.

After a few hours my router started freezing and the box started crashing and eventually stuck on boot and required the box to be flashed again and my router resetting.

Maybe ask kiddac or the many others who have had issues and advise against it.

So please feel free not to pass your assumptions in future that because someone advises against something that it means they didn't get it to work . I'm only trying to pass on some advice that was gained from experience.

Anyways hopefully it works ok for any of you that attempts it but the harsh reality is the theory behind doing it is good but the reality isn't so good and it's just one big head ache waiting to happen.

I agree eazzzzzzy.... We don't just randomly say this crashes your box and breaks your ftp for no reason. We have witnessed this first hand by experimenting ourselves. We like nothing more than reading how someone has crashed their box, copied what they have done and then crashed our boxes just to further our knowledge. We also spend a lot of time on this forum and see the problem over and over again. Your last sentence couldn't be anymore spot on. "it's just one big head ache waiting to happen.".

All we can do is warn people about the potential problems of doing this on a zgemma. If they wish to cause themselves potential problems with their box and open themselves up to hackers and the authorities that is entirely up to then. But I won't be setting up my box again for external viewing any time soon.

Not trying to sound a bit dense but reading this thread has just left me scratching my head I havnt the foggiest what any of it is on about

I have a zgemma with a nline is this something I should be concerned about at all I have no idea what the settings are (setup with the latest sucmnsee image)

Is there anything I need to do to increase my security?

Sorry for possibly sounding completely thick but you only know about stuff you've dealt with and learned about and my experience with these boxes lie solely in turning them
On and watching them I've just managed to follow a step by step guide to reflashing that had me sweating buckets haha

Dont worry about any of the above unless you have specifically set up your router and box so you can view your streams away from your home. Reading your reply, i am a 1000% sure you havent ;)

Just read this thread and I find it amazing at how many people have external viewing setup which can be easily accessed through google.

I really want to set it up for when I get back to uni so I can still use the box in our house, but from what i've seen and tested even if you've got HTTP secure on and still need a password to log onto the open webif people can still use one of your free tuners because when you actually download the m3u file to stream that doesn't need any verification and all that needs changing is the IP ?

Has there been a more secure way of doing this or not ?

- I did once find someone open box with them watching porn with the volume on 1 so assumed they must be trying to have a crafty one. So i turned the volume up to 100 and the box sharply turned off ahaha

Surprising isn't it - despite the many times that this has been pointed out people continue to ignore the warnings :)

To answer your question - VPN and SSh are two ways to secure the box. A plex setup is another one

Ok, so I've put a password on with putty, set HTTP auth to ON. Opened some ports.... am I secure?! the streaming works like a charm! I'm streaming HD over 4G (not for any length of time due to data!) using the Zgemma H2S flawlessly.

But... am I secure? are there any backdoors through the HTTP auth?

I'm no expert so wait for one to advise you further .
But I think you may be exposed by opening ports on your router to the www.

I have managed to stream out side of network with a vpn server of my own so it will only let me join the local network from outside if I go through my own vpn

I've secured the box with a root password and enabled http authentication so the ports forwarded to the box should be secure. Unless anyone can tell me otherwise?

been covered earlier on in this thread and plenty of others - how are you securing the actual stream?

Seems like your stream is exposed some how . To be able to watch mine I have to log in through my vpn server then I still need to log into sat box aswell so stream is secure ! as secure as I can get it anyway

Sorted it. closed the direct connection to the box and setup a vpn on my nas. works perfectly.

Long shot and probably a stupid question but hopefully someones still here to help!

I've setup an openvpn and it seems to be running ok on my Vu+duo2 box (openatv 6.1). But how do I now connect to webif remotely? Do I still need to open the ports? What address do I put in browser? My real ip or the one that openvpn created?

Just to add, when I got the config files from Windscribe (my vpn), it asked..."
Select location, protocol and port you'd like to use:"...I chose UK, UDP and one of the ports it suggested. Did I need TCP instead of UDP?

Thanks in advance
