MOT jobsworths useless ****

No a car that had faulty breaks but it had passed it's mot 3 days ago. At the end of the day its against the law to drive without having working lights the op knew the light was out and was too lazy to replace it. Own fault! What would of happened if during the time the OP knew the light was out the other had gone it's your driving behind him how you meant to know if he's breaking or not?
I'm very sorry to hear that but you're not exactly being rational.

That's why most modern cars (made in the last twenty years) have sealed high level brake lights made with LEDs. They last much longer than the bulbs.

Faulty brakes and a blown bulb of which I've provided a replacement are not the same things pal.

I really hate to sound like a ******, but I could quite easily go and remove the brake pads off the car right now ... Or better yet, tomorrow just after it's passed its MOT. The test is a broad brush and the fact it's only done once a year means for 11 months and 29 days, the car is open to all sorts of abuse.

In truth, you're acting like a tit. Comparing a blown bulb to knackered brakes... Christ.

I'm a tit? your the one moaning because someone did there job and failed your car because you couldn't be arsed to change a bulb that was out

Has anyone tried changing a bulb on some of these cars nowadays, some of they need the whole front bumper off.. lol... Nows thats what i call a nice easy money making exercise...lol...BUY BRITISH...pmsl...

Car designers should be forced to perform simple maintenance tasks on cars they design, the stupid airy fairy twunts might reconsider their plans then. Wife's car requires something like a vet does when he is attempting to pull a cows innards out of it's anus to change the N/S bulb. The other side only requires removal of battery or the ability to think in reverse and be triple jointed to acheive the desired result.

to be fare the otp asked the mot inspecter to replace bulb first and the garage i used to work in was £47 per houre and that wasent yesterday

Believe it or not the price the garage pay to the ministry of transport per MOT is £3.50 (Crazy or what )

buddy, ive spent over 30 years in the automotive business, and it tits like you that just dont get it.its your freaking car,not mine.its not for me to babysit you as to something as simple and mundane as bulb replacement.my job as a vehicle inspector is to go thru the inspection and pass or fail it on criteria that is cut and dried and in print no less.and dont pass off a blown bulb as not serious, cause it is.its people like you that badmouth mechanics and shops when you really dont know your ass from a hole in the ground.take a little responsibility for your own life.

Remind me not to go your garage mate

Hi all, let me say that I've been running a test station for 30 years now, and whilst I understand the OPs frustration, there is no need to tar all testers with the same brush. Also, there is no retest fee for several item, including lighting and drivers vew of the road, providing the faults are rectified and the vehicle returned for re-test before the end of the next working day. It is also acceptable for a tester to rectify minor items after the test has been completed but before the vehicle is logged of the system, this results in the defective items being logged as PRS on the system which means although a fail has been logged for the defects, a pass is immediately issued resulting in no time being lost for either tester or customer. These are the rules as laid down by DVSA, and if everyone stuck to them there would be no cause for argument. Incidently, as far as bulbs are concerned, we usually only charge a couple of quid on top of the price of the bulb, unless fitting is a total pita. Please also bare in mind that an MOT takes around 40 mins and takes 2 people in most cases. So 80mins for £54.85 when our normal rate is £55 p/h so most garages actually lose money.

Hi Nicky1963...I have been running a car on & off for 40 years, and not once has there ever been 2 tested, is this a new MOT rule m8, as it's news to me...????

Hi Wullboy, no not new, been a test requirement since the dawn of testing, however in the last few years one person testing has been allowed but only if you have a specialised test lane.

"AEs must ensure that assistance is always available to NTs for those parts of the test that require it". This is taken from the testers manual. AE = Authorised Entity, ie Test station. NT = Nominated tester, the person approved to carry out the test.

I've not said I don't have a clue. I said I ran out of time. 5 minutes job mate. It's people like yourself that give the motor garage industry a bad name.

the trouble is people should know how a car works and some of the cars i see are a laugh, knowing a bulb is gone is not rocket science as one should see your light reflecting on car in front and in rear when stopped.how many twats forget to switch lights on lol.
lights are crucial as if not seen will have more chance of an accident and i mean the idiots driving with side light on only when dark.

if the nct over here will fail on a bulb gone but get it fixed and go back for a visual then your cert is given.we had a trajet in that passed nct with rotten rear spring mounts ,told the owner hazardous and not roadworthy.

just doing his job as a tester for failing it, i bet if the item in the drivers view ie the airfreshners hanging were easily removable he would of just put the bulb in and done a PRS on it. im a tester myself and if its going to fail on a bulb or bulbs being out and its got items on the mirror hanging i just fail it if there hard to remove from the mirror. if there easily removable i will remove and put an advisory for items removed from windscreen prior to test and just fit a bulb
