I used to do motorised so read this with a bit of interest. I go back a long way and one vital aspect is the 3 dot rule, you have to imagine dish, motor and lnb is a gun, from behind dish all 3 have to be in a dead straight line. A good lnb works wonders, the best is black ultra, good cable is a must, a receiver with a sensitive tuner, and clear line of sight to the south is a given, also clear rooftops, a good sized dish, bigger is better, a good motor. With that the rest is down to the installation. It has to 100% correct.
toffee, can you say size of dish, is pole mount with t&k brackets, make of motor, make of lnb, and receiver, i think its openbox.
with usals its a lot easier these days but if dish is crooked, set up ie pole not exactly straight, dish not level, fixings can make dish crooked, counting thread on bolts so they are the same is a help, dont have eveything tightened too much until the end, markings on dishes and motors are not accurate, so thats what tweaking does. A lot of people forget about tuning the lnb ie the focal length, this is where you move lnb in and out to get best signal and you have do do it on a vertical channel and a horizontal. I use the signal strength on the box. If you cant get 0.8west, you can use 28east, but you must start dish from due south ie 12 midday tell dish to go to 28east, then turn whole rig until you get sky news, there is a gap when signal hits dish and gets to receiver so pause. In the end if the rig is out you struggle.
