Is it not better to connect directly from the dish with F-connectors?

you can change the plate easy enough to f connector
but you need to test to where it goes too

On the presumption that those cables come from the dish, if I go direct I'll have to see how easy it is to pull through any available cable.

you do not need to go direct to the dish,the idea of them plates are to keep everything neat instead of cables going along the floor

If it is a live cable just change the plate to a proper F connector type.

So this ended up being what we expected: the satellite cable connected to an RF faceplate. Just ended up getting a couple of RF to F-type cables, and it works fine.
