Pádraig Harrington's good form will be welcomed by Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie

Pádraig Harrington has made an impressive return to the US PGA Tour circuit, recording a five-under-par round at the St Jude Classic.

Harrington was among the early starters at TPC Southwind and he hit five birdies in a bogey free round of 65 that was his first competitive 18 holes since undergoing keyhole surgery on his knee.

News of the Dubliner's good form will be welcomed by Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, who will be hoping the three-time Major winner can play well enough to reclaim an automatic place in the team ahead of the Celtic Manor showdown.

Harrington trails fellow Ryder Cup star Lee Westwood by two shots.

The Englishman carded a superb seven-under-par 63 over the par-70 layout to head the leaderboard.

Rory McIlroy is among the late starters and was level par around the turn.
