Power line speed tests

I've been a little underwhelmed with the speed I'm getting from my TP-Link AV500 powerline adaptors, so I ran a few tests. Hopefully some will find it interesting, and maybe a few techies can offer some advice?

So, I created a folder and filled it with 10GB of files - 1x5GB, 4x1GB, 1x500MB etc etc down to 10x1MB. I copied that from Desktop to Desktop and averaged 254MB/s.

For test two I copied the same folder down a cat 5 cable to a hub, then another cat5 to my server. All ports are gigabit. Average speed was 44.4MB/s (which is about half of gigabit, yes?)

For test three I swapped the hub for the two powerline adaptors side by side in a double socket. Average speed was 11.5MB/s, which is about 1/5 of the advertised 500Mb/s ...

I know the manufacturers say that the speed is affected by the mains wiring quality and whether the plugs are in extension blocks, but short of brazing them together I don't see how I can get a better connection:(
