surround sound

Mate's given me an old surround sound system he no longer wanted, without any boxes or manuals though...

I've been messing about with it this evening and I've plugged all the speakers into the main speaker, but not sure how to go about connecting it up to a source. Do I need to plug this into the TV (it has the three leads - composite cables are they called? red white and yellow) or does it go into the back of my receiver?

I have mine into TV (optical) would have it in box but I use it for PlayStation too aswel as the movies I watch on instant video and YouTube (smart tv)

There are two options depending on your specific equipment.
1. If your TV has an audio output (usually optical audio) then connect that to your HTS. Set the TV to output surround sound (you might have to try any options offered as they are often not clearly labeled). If your TV only has analog audio output you could use that but you won't get digital surround sound.
2. Connect your sources to the TV with HDMI. Connect each sources audio out to the HTS. Not as convenient and you won't get sound from the TV tuner or "smart functions" since these come only from the TV.
Option 1 is best bet.
