Pay TV networks in the UAE are stepping up efforts to reduce piracy in their industry.

Piracy in the area has been increasing despite efforts from the TV suppliers and government to crack down on abusers.

It has been estimated that at least 60 per cent of the country’s south Asian community have been illegally accessing an Indian satellite broadcaster which does not have licences to broadcast in the Middle East.

The huge loss of revenue has prompted the region’s pay-TV providers to form a piracy fighting fund, with the money going into swapping hundreds of thousands of set-top boxes for new ones with special encryption technology.

The providers have also been working with the local telecommunications authorities to block the IP addresses of servers that store hacked passwords for its set-top boxes.
