Excuse me for being a bit naive, but wouldn't the point of "chipping" something to be that the "chip" would overwrite or modify the currently installed software?

chipping not required most times you just need to solder on jtag connection to flash new firmware.

I don't know why people really bother to do this it's so hard to even get details for a clone now I found this out when I got a bunch of modems (surfboard ones) which are now sitting here doing nothing.
