Saving & converting recorded tv programs

When i record a program they are saved on the hdd as .ts files, i can drag them from the hdd to my laptop via ftp, i want to be able to convert the file to a smaller file size to something like mp4, mkv or avi has anyone tried doing this & what did they use to convert the .ts file?

Yes - this works fine.

I have used Freemake - very easy. Also Handbrake for moving to mp4.

Actually I usually use Cyberlink Pro Director but that seemed to struggle and ran really slowly.

If you need to remove adverts - I find that using a program to remove the ads and then re-save without needing to re-encode works well, then doing the conversion afterwards. Instead of trying to remove the ads and re-enclde from .ts to .mp4.

I had previously purchased a program called "video redo" and that is what I use to cut the adverts out, before using either free make of handbrake to convert to the MP4, although it has the settings do it all in the same program.

I made a notepad file with some of the resulting file sizes when I was playing around - will see if I still have it and will put the details up here if so.
I took a BT Sports HD recording for example and shifted to 720p and the size was far smaller but picture wise no noticeable difference to the original broadcast even.

Also - if you find anything else good please post back here and share the info!

I was going to start offloading and compressing the .TS files if my 128GB memory stick started to fill up.

"WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe" gets good reviews but haven't tried it yet. Might download it after work and compress a short 10min HD file to see what it is like.

Anyone used "WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe" or better recommendations?

If it helps you any, you can simply change the file extension from .ts to .mpeg, just in case whatever program you use doesn't recognise the format. I've got Any Video Converter but it is slow.

I did look in settings but couldn't find a setting to change the extension, where is it please?

I think most programs will be slow when converting big files, on of mine is 17gb LOL

That's interesting system lord, might make the file better in power director which is what I would usually use for video editing.

These are my notes. Might be useful to someone in the future.

So I was getting results for HD footage of roughly a 20 - 25% the file size with no noticeable difference when played back on a 55" Tv.

Sd footage was converted but was about 55 - 60% of original file

Think you will find you need to copy the file over to PC then simply rename it. Might be a Windows setting to show the file extension spends on how you have Windows setup at the moment.

Yeah i've already done that mate, VLC player plays the .ts file without any problem. Using freemake at the moment to convert an hour long file 2gb to DVD quality 700mb to see how long it takes & what the quality is like. Then i'll try WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe to do the same thing & compare the two.

Freemake converted 2.9gb .ts file in 2hr 25mins converting to DVD Quality output file 825mb mkv file. I'm happy with the quality below is a snapshot taken from vlc

WinX HD took 2hr 45min I tried to find the same video quality as Freemake but could only find MKV options of LQ & HQ so i selected LQ. The 758mb file states Frame Width 1920 x Frame Height 1080 (Freemake file is 720 x 404) but the quality doesn't look as good as the freemake one.

I use BSPlayer Free and Mx Player to play the .TS files on an Android box that it is streaming across my network and neither app can fast forward / rewind the .TS file.
You play the .TS files with VLC player, have you tried to fast forward / rewind with this player?
Just wondering if its the player or the fact I am getting an android box to play .TS files on the Zgemma 2S across the ethernet that will not allow me to fast forward / rewind.
Must copy a .TS to the android box as well as install VLC player to see if either can fix issue. Would be nice elsewhere in the house to be able to play .TS recorded files across network.

P.S. I am aware of timote app. Just would like Kodi to be able to see the Zgemma as another source and play through Kodi on Android box.

Bigasoft Total Video Converter 1hr 17mins MKV Frame Width 1920 x Frame Height 1080 quality looks as good as Freemake.

just to add to this interesting thread.
VLC player and most other decent video software will play this file no matter what you call it. movie.fecker (if you want). As it reads the MIME type of the video as mpeg.

if you examine one of these ts files through exiftool (which will tell you exactly what type of file it is).. you get the following.

File Type: m2t
file type extension. m2t
mime type: video/mpeg
audio stream: mpeg-2 audio
mpeg audio version: 1
Audio layer: 2
Audio bitrate: 192 kps
sample rate: 48000

might help you all with your faffings.

I'm happy now, I've achieved what I wanted to convert the .ts to a decent size & decent quality within a decent time.

I download most things via torrents but it's handy to know I can now save my recordings I want to keep to my laptop.

I've been doing this for years, ftping the .ts recordings to my desktop. I use videoredo to cut out the ads, then save the new combined file output as a .mpg in videoredo. I then run it through Any Video Convertor (AVC) and re-encode this to a customied AVI. This gives me a decent quality and a reasonably small file size that can be played on all my media devices, ps3, kodi, MCE etc with no issues. Hth

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but which version of VideoReDo are you guys using to remove commercials? I Have VideoReDo TVSuite H.264 v4.21 and when I try to run the .ts file (regardles if its extension is .ts or .mpeg) through it I get the below error:
