The actor died in California on Monday night, according to a report on TMZ. Further details about Bain's death have not yet been determined.

His daughter Jennifer described her father as an "amazing person" and compared him to his Diff'rent Strokes character. "He was a lot like Mr Drummond, but much more interesting in real life," she said, explaining that he spent his last few days with family. "He was an amazing father."

Bain - who is survived by his twin brother, three sons and Jennifer - is also known for his roles in television series such as Maude and Mr President.

His death means that Todd Bridges - who played Willis - is the only principal cast member of Diff'rent Strokes still alive. Garry Coleman (Arnold) died in 2010, while Dana Plato (Kimberely) committed suicide in 1999. The show ran from 1978 to 1986.

A show I watched loads growing up and very sad to see the old man die.
The so-called curse of the show has made such a comedic programme a very sad affair.
