The 42-year-old Danish director shot to fame with the Pusher films, but in recent years has won critical acclaim for films such as Valhalla Rising, Bronson and Drive.

Richard Wenk penned the script, which follows a former covert operations officer of a US government agency who hates injustice and fights for those who can't, as a way of paying back his own debts to society.

The original The Equalizer series was created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim and starred Edward Woodward and Robert Lansing, running from 1985 to 1989.

Denzel Washington will lead the film, a part which was originally considered by Russell Crowe.
