Careful now. Best be on your best behaviour over the next few days, as Gardaí have deployed a bumper batch of portable speed cameras on traffic blackspots.

We know you're a law-abiding lot, but you need to be particularly well behaved over the days ahead.

Gardaí are keen that this year's St Patrick's Day is a safe one for motorists, ditto the weekend that follows, and have made arrangements for 6,000 hours of extra traffic monitoring.

During a joint press conference with the Road Safety Authority, Gardaí said the new cameras were being introduced in an attempt to combat the increased number of fatalities on the roads so far this year.

So far, 2011 has been a dark one in terms of serious accidents and road deaths, with almost 50 per cent more people killed on the roads so far this year number of people killed on the roads so far this year compared with the same period in 2010.

The new cameras are being introduced one week after a vehicle carrying a portable speed camera was set alight on the N11 in Gorey.

The vehicle was manned at the time, with the occupant having to make a dash to escape the burning vehicle unscathed.

Privately operated portable cameras were introduced last November.

Gardaí announced that all possible locations were posted on a their website, causing the site to immediately crash.
