How to check if my cable feed is active

Hi just wondering the simple way to check if my cable fed is active?
Do i just plug the cable rf connection directly into the back of my tv and tune? and see if i can receive BBC1 or do i need the cable connection in a VM receiver to tune event he basic fta channel

you will need some form of Receiver/Tuner than can do the DVB-C standard, A lot of televisions do have a cable option in the main tuning menu so yours may have to

brilliant thnaks ,my tv just has a rf in, and didnt pick up anything but a glimmer of hope if i need a receiver to pickup dvb-c
got a Sundtek dvb-c tuner on order hopefully that works

did you check your tuner to see ift freeview by aerial or old analogue.i know the sundtek works.
