Movie format query

Can someone please advise what movie formats will be recognised by my VU+ Solo2?
I have an HDD full of movies, and wondered if I can view them the same way I can view recorded programs

Due to the 100's of different ways that download movies are encoded and with what software did the original encode its hard to tell, basically its trial and error what will play and what wont play

i play all kinds of files on my solo2 through plex-xvid mkvs not had 1 not play yet.

Plex is a plugin that i use to connect via network on my solo2 to my pc to play all my media downstairs without having to burn to disc or usb sticks.Called dreamplex on solo2.
