Another face from hit show Love/Hate, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, who plays Nidge, is also starring in the show as Haughey’s advisor PJ Mara.

'Charlie', which is to be produced by Touchpaper Television and Element Films, will begin shooting next week.

The series will consist of three feature length episodes spanning from 1979 to 1992, documenting Haughey’s persuit of power and the emergence of modern Ireland.

The cast of approximately 45 stars also includes Lucy Cohu as Terry Keane, Gavin O’ Connor, Risteard Cooper, Peter O’ Meara, Frankie McCafferty and Love/Hate's Laurence Kinlan.

Jane Gogan, Head of RTÉ Television Drama said,

“We have a fantastic cast lined up to tell a story about one of the most intriguing characters in Irish political life.”

Producer Catherine Magee said, “Element Pictures and Touchpaper Television are delighted to begin production on a trilogy of dramas about Charles Haughey for RTÉ penned by Dublin-born writer Colin Teevan and drawing on the finest of Irish screen talent.”

George Dixon, Channel Controller, RTÉ One said,

“As the unprecedented audience for this week’s opening episode of Love/Hate shows, the Irish public have a great appetite for quality Irish drama. I’m delighted that we are in a position through our partnership with the BAI to deliver another landmark Irish drama series to viewers and to support the independent production sector in Ireland”.


Filming will last for nine weeks. Broadcast details will be confirmed closer to transmission.
