Can someone explain what these are in relation to this box - is the like the operating system and how do they vary?

They are called "images" you could liken it to a computers operating system.

You can use different images on "open source" boxes, which use linux.

Basically the boxes can be sold blank, a choice of images then can be loaded on to the box, the image is written by a third party.

"closed source" boxes means that the box and "firmware"(the equivalent of an image)
are supplied by the box manufacturer. So you must always use the manufacturers updates.

Finally clone boxes, some well known original boxes are supported by certain images.

Cloned boxes can be bricked by using the official supported images, so they need a modded version
of the image known as a clone safe version.

As for Zgemma you will need to make sure you load the correct image on the box.
