I remember when I was doing my training on computer maintenance (many years ago) we were taught that the reason the "screensaver" was invented was to stop image burn on the old tube monitors. They used to work by firing a beam of electrons at a layer of phosphorus on the screen and if that beam didn't keep moving around it would burn the phosphorus and leave a ghost image. So, someone came up with the idea of putting a constantly moving image on the screen, when it was not in use, and so the screensaver was born.
