Sky box gone dead

Skybox f5 box has completely died, just shows a faint number 8 on display. I've heard I need to update the firmware or something? Can someone tell me what to do step by step please?

doubt if it will be the firmware, more than likely the power supply by the sounds of it

I've recovered many boxes over the years, but there have been a couple showing the faint "8" that just wouldn't respond to the RS232 method. Might still be worth a try though.
