The Moderation on eBay forums ticks me off.

Maybe I shouldn't post about other forums but I wanted a good rant so here goes.
As you may or may not know, eBay has discussion forums for its members. These forums are split into various sections with some being specifically for things like Books, Motors etc and some are for any kind of off-eBay chat. I use the latter kind, mainly the Round Table forum.
Now, as you can imagine, eBay has sites all over the world and many forums on each site. This makes moderation tricky to say the least so what eBay has done is hire the services of a company called Liveworld to do the moderation for them. Now, Liveworld don't actually read the posts as a first line of defence against wrong doers. Liveworld depends on other forum users clicking on a "Report" button which appears on every post. The report button is unanimous so nobody on the forum knows who pressed it.
That's where the trouble starts.
The guidelines for what is allowed and what isn't allowed on the forums is known as the BUP (Board Usage Policy) and it is worded in such a way that even posting a smilie face can get you in trouble. If you post anything that breaks the rules of the BUP and get reported, this can have 1 of 2 results. One is that the report is ignored because the Liveworld rep doesn't consider the post to have broken the rules. On the other hand, the Liveworld rep can remove your post and issue you with a warning. If you get 3 warnings you get banned for a week. Get another warning and you get banned for 30 days. After that, you get banned for life.
People say, it's just a forum and there are plenty of others around, but those folk are missing the point. I have been on that forum since 20th of March 2001. It's my PC's Home page and I read and post there every single day.
So just imagine this scenario. Some guy gets a ban for posting porn. He has no idea who pressed the report button on him but he blames any or all of the regulars so goes back over the last 2 weeks of posts and reports every post made by 15 or so posters. Does Liveworld stop and think, "Mmmmm, Maybe this is some kind of malicious reporting". ....... No, they just either issue slaps or ignore depending on the actual post. Now, bearing in mind that there is this thing now about staying on topic, you can get a warning for just saying something like, "Hi Bren. How's your back since the op?"
Oh, and get this. It is a verified fact that one rule laid down by eBay when the contract was given to Liveworld was that under no circumstances should Liveworld enter into any kind of discussion with eBay members. So that means that when you write a long post to the Round Table forum, maybe as long as this post, if somebody clicks the report button and a Liveworld employee checks the post and finds fault with it, what happens is this ..... You get an e-mail from Liveworld and this e-mail has a bit saying that you broke a rule followed by your post IN FULL. then follows something along the lines of .... This post has been removed because we do not allow profanity, vulgarity, hate speech, disruptive, or hostile comments, interpersonal disputes or threats of violence in a post.
Here's the kicker. There is no indication as to which part of your post broke a rule. How difficult would it be, when copy/pasting the post into the e-mail, to just highlight the naughty bit? This would achieve 2 things that have caused an awful lot of concern. It would prove beyond doubt that the Liveworld employee had actually read the post as opposed to just issuing the warning. Plus, it would tell you exactly where you had gone wrong and maybe give grounds to dispute the warning with a forum manager who has the power to over-ride any slaps if he/she feels that a warning was uncalled for.
Rant over ...... for now.

eBay are always messing around with their site, i find it difficult using it at times.

Have you tried putting your strong worded rant into an email and send it to liveworld? Let us know if you do and if they respond.

You can't send messages to Liveworld. OK, Yes, you can technically send them an e-mail but they won't respond in any way.

You could maybe slate them on the Ebay forum and then report your own post so they would have to read it :)

Getting a message to Liveworld isn't the problem. The problem is getting a reply. They are not allowed, contractually, to respond.

Here is an example of what I mean by not being told which part of a post is breaking a rule. What follows is an actual Warning e-mail from Liveworld, we call them Slaps. Nothing has been changed except that I have removed my name so as not to be advertising the stuff I'm selling. The original post was all about Chris Rock.

Dear xxxxxxxx(ME),

It has recently come to our attention that one of your posts on our Community Center breached our
Community Usage policy. The public Community on eBay is intended to be a helpful, educational and
enjoyable place to meet and converse with other members. As such, courteous and respectful postings
are expected from all participants. It's against eBay rules to use inappropriate language or post
certain types of material.

Here's a copy of your content:

He's a black American stand-up comedian but he doesn't tell jokes. He tells the truth about stuff
in America. For instance, the difference between being rich and being wealthy.
The bottom line is that white folk are wealthy but black folk are only rich. He explains it like
this.
White folk brew beer and stronger drinks which, when drunk, kill thousands of people every year and
nobody cares. White folk make guns which get into the hands of kids who shoot either themselves or a
school-mate. These same guns are used in robberies etc but that's fine. White folk own companies
that make the drugs that you see advertised on TV but it's OK for you to get hooked on them.
It's only drugs sold by the non-white folk that can get you imprisoned.
In short, it's OK for white folk to get rich from the deaths of others but not for a black person
to do the same.
He had an arena the size of the O2 wetting themselves.

We have removed this content because the following is not allowed on our Community Center:
2: Including profanity, vulgarity, hate speech, disruptive, or hostile comments, interpersonal
disputes, or threats of violence in a post.

We realise you may not be aware of this rule. For more information on our Community Usage policy
please visit (There was a link here but I had to remove it to conform to THIS forum's rules.)

We respectfully request that you refrain from this activity in the future. If you have any queries
about our policies, click "Contact Us" on any eBay Help page.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter.

Can you figure out which part of my post broke which rule?

Unfortunately, everyone has their own opinion and someone thought that was offensive so reported it even though it was a quote from Chris rock the absolute pleb, don't like him one bit!
A quick and easy solution for live world rather than having a string of possible hate replies or more reports is just to have the comment removed.
I for one agree with your statement about the idiot :)

You have hit the nail on the head.
Somebody reported my post. But here's the $64,000 question. Did they report my post because the genuinely found some part of it offensive in some way, or did they report it as a means to getting me "Slapped" and maybe banned? That may sound a bit OTT but we have a mass of these warning mails after a week-end when the trolls come out to play.

We'll never know I guess, a reason may have been given with the report as standard which is always confidential anyways so that's just between live world and the reporter now. Probably was just a moron with nothing better to do though!

Unfortunately there are many people in the world that like to cause disruption and make other people unhappy just because they can, and have nothing better to do.
Don't know if it is boredom, jealousy, stupidity, or just plain wickedness, but I do feel sorry for genuine people like yourself with years of conversing on the forums who become the victims of these wicked people.

Not sure what the solution to this problem is, or how easy a solution can be implemented, or at what cost due to what I imagine may be one of the largest forum rings in the world.

jodav :)

It won't cure everything and it won't stop the trolls from clicking the Report button but there is a simple answer that will solve a great deal of the problem. I must add that on the UK forums, if you click on the report button, you are not presented with a list of possible "crimes" to pick from. In the UK, Liveworld do not know why a post is being reported.
All that needs to happen to clear up a lot of the distrust about Liveworld is for the e-mail that Liveworld send to you with your complete post to have the offending part highlighted in some way.
This will prove beyond doubt that Liveworld have actually read the post and found fault with it themselves. This would also put to bed the thought that Liveworld simple get a report and count it as a done deal and issue a Slap without reading the post. Working on the principle that, "It got reported so it must be bad, right?"
How difficult would it be to do that? How difficult to somehow make a few words or even a sentence stand out from the rest?
I can to it with my e-mail programme and I can do it here.
Here's the question.
Why are Liveworld refusing to do it? What are they covering up? They have supposedly been asked by our Community manager but nothing came of it.
I can honestly say that 70% or more of the long time posters have left. It isn't all because of the moderation, eBay have also messed with the way that the forum works.

Hey steve,
just read this thread, and I have to agree with you, if the "report post" tab then created a pop up which said something like "what do you wish to report about this post" then maybe it would be clearer to the moderating staff, who could then A. rule on the said post, and B. let you know what was wrong with the post.
people being people, there will always be those who just want to cause trouble ( we had some around here, Gazza for instance) but the thing is to rise above them and not let them get you down.
the E-bay forum is the loser in this and TechKings is the winner - you are welcome to our friendly forum, I hope you and any other friends that you invite along enjoy our little corner of the internet and never feel that you have been unfairly treated here
