Cable Which drive to use?

So I've got a SanDisk USB right now but it stutters during playback or timeshift so I'm guessing it isn't quick enough.

Should I go for an external HDD if so what is recommended. Would I need an external power source or can I run it off the box?

external power source is better so is hard drive.

I'm running a hdd off the box without external power and it runs fine

Thanks folks. I'll be getting a 1Tb just to add. If it runs off the USB great. If not external power is fine.
