Hi looking to add a hard-drive to my H52TC, for recording and pausing/rewinding etc.
My question is... Do i still need a Socket powered version, they're hard to find now days.
Whats the disadvantage with using a USB powered hard-drive?

Any recommendations?

I use a USB powered toshiba convio and have used the same one for 2 years with no issues

500GB Canvio draws 0.5A writing and about 0.2A at rest. Most of the bus powered drives are about the same.

Yup, Toshiba USB powered. Used mine for years with no issues.

I'd agree with that as the standard for USB2 is 500mA [ 0.5A ]
so no USB powered drive should require more than 0.5 amp
I think the issue is the size of the box PSU being able to provide the USB port with the required 500mA ,
