Ah that makes sense to me now, so you just set your device to their dns, they then automatically make it look like you are in a country depending on the service you are using based on your account settings. So you can set their DNS on your router (Deco M4 for example) rather than on all your devices?
Yep got it👍 30 day trial do see if it works better for you...controld has lots more functionality to ...blocking ads etc ...some I know have it customised to do lots more.

Yes. I have been running it on my router. Not sure if your model is supported, but their site will tell you.

Tutorials for different devices are here.

If not there, you can still set it up manually - I had to do that on my GL iNet router

OK in summary :

VPN - your data between you and vpn is secure as it is encrypted so use this if you are worried about big brother watching you're every move

DNS Service like ControlD - Simple to set geolocations for different services plus add blocking facitilites etc but data not encrypted so not as secure as VPN.

Does ControlD get around ISP blocks for those that experience them on a Saturday afternoon or is VPN still required for that?

I’m no expert, so take this with a pinch on salt. I’d say it’s less secure than VPN, but still some security if run as DoH where I believe the https provides some protection.

DNS not as secure as VPNS and you won't be able to bypass the ISP blocks for IPTV unless the dns service also has a vpn service...don't think controld has.

signed up for the trial, added dns to router, only uses legacy dns so as said not as secure but that's not something that bothers me too much. Anyone know how to set dns servers on android phones for when out and about, can't find dns settings

Not sure how it’s works on android, but on iOS you download a profile and install that. I suspect it will be similar - so I don’t think you need to use legacy dns or find the settings.

Did you try following the setup guide for android phone available on the website?

Doesn't controld just use Windscribe VPN underlining service for their infrastructure.
I find Windscribe crap at times dependant on country. So wouldn't controld just behave the same ?

I think you are right, Windscribe and Controld are the same people and with the tests I've done today if I lookup 'my ip address' when using controld it does appear to be VPN server which would suggest you're right. The only difference is using controld your connection between you and their server is not encrypted so not secure.

I don't use many services that require being in specific countries so can't see me using Controld. I can just use my VPN for the odd occasion I need to be somewhere else

I've been reading this thread for months, although Christ knows why, I have no interest in any of the apps or content but I think controlD can be set to open EG Paramount+ via Argentina, then if you change app to one of the others, that can be set to India, another set to Philippines and so on, you're not chopping and changing VPN locations for each app/player

Ya I see the advantage of it in that regard, but it's very limited to one provider which seems to just be Windscribe repackaged.

This thread is very much down the rabbit hole at this stage 😂
Yesterday I installed racoon on PC which allows you to download any APK from play store, instead of getting apks from APKPure etc which may be loaded with spyware it does a direct extraction from play store. Only got it working for mobile apks though as it emulates a Samsung phone. There is an another app droiddummy which is supposed to allow emulation of android tv and therefore download any APK from play store also for Android Tv. It's bit impossible to set up though and no one knows much about it.

So if you have a VPN ie if you signed up for a year or two, what benefits would you get from ControlD. I see the website says no apps to install, so does that mean you need to change DNS Manually if you wanted to move from the Philipenes to Argentina?

It is quite handy for me as I often forget to turn off my vpn and my IPTV supplier can get a bit angry 😠 anyway I have at last got it working with 2 weeks help from support! They decided my address is ipv6 now! Don't know how that changed overnight but all good
