cheap is relative
I was looking for a £50 router, then someone on here linked me to a Linksys £100 router that was on offer,
I bought it, and couldnt be happier, even though it was twice my budget.
I also have a £15 GL-arm travel router, and it is really good at what it is for the money, but as an everyday router it would be useless
the GL router has a maximum speed of about 15 Meg, the Linksys shows me no speed loss at all on a 70 Meg connection.
you pays your money and takes your choice, saving money isnt always a saving in the long run.

Interesting!

Just a question. Say your box you use to stream everything on you want certain Apps to make use of the VPN then other apps to use your regular connection how do you go about this? I know Split Tunnelling exists for this kind of thing but how do you go about achieving this on a Streaming Box and a VPN on the router?

For example how to would you make Optus Sport use Aussie VPN on your router and BBC Iplayer to use your regular connection outside of the VPN on the same router?

This is where the asus merlin firmware and am sure whatever @steptoe is using does...you can select what device uses the vpn and also you can add a few vpn servers and all of them run specific apps...Great once setup ..especially for apple tv users as u can't get vpn on them.

Sounds really handy mate so with the given firmware you can select what apps on your ATV use what connection? I didn't know this was possible to this level. Sounds ideal.

On a sidenote I've always wondered why VPNs get blocked more than SmartDNS servers....

Hey.........welcome back, I don't think you can go that deep (i.e. choose which channels use a vpn), but as @Kyser143 states above Merlin Firmware allows certain devices to use the vpn and others to bypass it

Hey man, hope you are well? That's what I was getting at. If you load the VPN and can only use the device for everything on the same VPN connection then surely a Smart DNS that routes traffic is superior when switching between apps. Be interesting to hear what Steptoe has setup!

I am good thanks, I have not really tried or looked into Smart DNS, but yes it would be interesting to find out if it is a better solution. I have tried the multiple VPN's for different devices using the Merlin Firmware, and it was ok, but if you have multiple connections for different devices running at the same time on your router, your router may struggle depending on what router you have of course.

I have DDWRT on a Liinksys WRT1900ACS
I'm not sure how specific you could be on setting it up, I either run a device through the VPN, or I dont, there are options as to what devices bypass the VPN
I dont thnk you could set it up to have the device use the vpn on certain apps, and not use it with other apps, or change the vpn location,
but, its 2 minutes to log in to the router and change the VPN address, or simply have the device log onto an access point not on the VPN network,
I have 2 wif networks at home , made using surplus TT routers that I had lying around ( set up as routers/switches with wifi available ) set up as an ad-hoc mesh system,

Your right about dns being superior ...but when it works and unlocks that service...guys who use servers swear that the vpn servers added to router work better...faster and quicker.

Not tried myself what so unsure of actual difference..how ever the one flaw of the apple tv is not allowing a vpn and this def bypasses that...and some services dns don't cover hence I guess another reason..also the users are reporting some services work better via vpn than dns ..eg sky sports nz..

But as always if you have the apps you need and they work via a dns then why spend on another router...buy vpns to load as you can't used shared ones.. got to just weigh up what's best for you.

Thanks for clearing that up. With a SmartDNS you don't have to worry about routing different traffic through your router and changing anything at all as the DNS direct on the Device does it for you. Zero faffing about.

I understand why yours would be beneficial on devices that don't support VPNs but if you primary focus is streaming from Geo Restricted countries then imo a SmartDNS is superior thaa a VPN in every way. It routes traffic accordingly, there's no throttling and once setup once you are good to go for all apps.

I used VPNS for a good while now I just stick to a SmarDNS. I can't even remember the last time I needed to change anything on the DNS it just works if that makes sense. Before SmartDNS i used to mess with VPNs and they often got blocked etc. It was often a game of cat and mouse. Funny enough for the main apps I used I can't remember them going down once on the SmartDNS since I've had it.

That's it mate if it works with the latter than it's not needed. The ATV becomes redundant should SmartDNS ever stop working for ever reason. Then you have to go the VPN on router route or sack it off completely.

on a side note, or maybe sticking to the original thread,
F1 , MotoGP , and WSBK ( and sometimes BSB ) are all available on servustv if you have a VPN set to Austria, maybe someone could check if a DNS works.
if you watch live they all have English commentary, catch up is normally in German ( I think )

whats the latest way to get neflix turkey? I just tried a new account but it needs a phone number for turkey.
My card expired and to update the details it needed a code sent to a local mobile, I messed around for ages, they turned off my sub. I then remembered my pal who owns a place out there had a mobile, so that's what I did.
There was no other way around it that I could find.

I get a pop up sometimes to verify my phone number but never have, I buy netflix turkey gift cards and then pay with them.
I have had this before and ignored it, no problems, but when I needed to interact, I had to find a phone.
If you have ever paid for your Netflix with a card, you can't use gift cards as a payment method, it needs to be a "virgin" account.

This would appear to mean that you need to start a new account using a VPN, then pay by gift cards, which you can purchase from here

Netflix Gift Card 100 TL Key TURKEY | Cheap price | ENEBA

Amongst other places.

This thread is quite a gold mine.
I had one question though, which might be a bit of a stupid question:

Those that use VPN + streaming service from another country like paramount+ etc for Premier League , why do this as oppose to use IPTV sub.

Because it's a genuine sub, like SkyGo and it's not illegal, some people prefer not to break the law for some reason🤷‍♂️
