Toilet button

I’ve just moved. The bathroom toilet upstairs is totally tiled in and on the wall next to the toilet is a button flush. Problem is it’s not like you lightly push it and the toilet flushes, it feels like you have to pump it. You meet with quite heavy resistance like your pumping air or water, can take two or three attempts to build up enough momentum to make it flush. Now it’s just given up all together. It’s totally tiled in with just this little plunger button sticking out. The only way I can see to get to the back is maybe getting in the loft space behind it.
The only place I’ve ever noticed this type of action plunger is in a public toilet with like a bigger type button on the wall that you almost feel you have to push it hard to make it work. Can anyone shed any like on what type of mechanism this is, so that I know what I’m looking for on Google. Thanks

A couple of manufacturers make pneumatic push button cisterns that we stock at work, Roper rhodes and I think Dudley do one. plumbers generally leave an access panel for getting to them but if you ain't got one then have a look in your loft.

Sorted it. Was easier than I thought. It has an air pipe that operates the cistern. I pulled the button out and there was a hole in the bellows plunger. If I blew down the pipe it flushed. Went to get a new one from plumbing supplies. All sorted. Was envisioning a nightmare job. Phew. Thanks for replies .

Nice one, there's alot of stuff on YouTube for plumbing and DIY, surprising what you can learn with a bit of research.

I searched YouTube but couldn’t find one like this. Came up with that rectangular flush plate you mentioned but nothing like that. I hope nothing ever goes seriously wrong with it or I’ll need a contortionist plumber.

What is behind the tiled wall housing the cistern?
They always put a service hatch behind, if its a bedroom, check behind wardrobes etc.
If its accessible from a loft space then this is how it will be accessed when repair or replacement is required

It’s a dorma and the bathroom is in the loft space.there’s crawl room to get along between the roof and the bathroom wall . That’s going to be the way to get to the back of it. Bit claustrophobic in there.
