I know you got a different USB to auto mount as media/usb.
I'd unmount both of the USB and then mount the one that worked as media/hdd and reboot. If the second USB auto mounts, then I think you can narrow it down to a USB issue. If that's the case, then I'd try reformatting and mounting again. If that's doesn't work, then it's time for a new USB.
