ZGemma H5.2TC or Edison OS Mini+ (Plus)?

*** Apologies if this has been posted but I couldn't really find a definite answer ***

We've decided now to switch to a Vermin box for our TV but I'm struggling really to decide on a budget-y box.

The budget (£100 or so) from what I can find only really caters for both these boxes. Now, I've had ZGemma in the past, currently owning a H.2S and setup a H.2H in the past for a friend.

Looking at the specs, both boxes aren't that different, the ZGemma offers a triple tuner setup where as the Edison offers a single on both? (I could be wrong on this as it mentions a new type of single tuner). The Edison offers an extra 256mb storage too. Both support HEVC (H.265), have the same amount of RAM and have, from what I can find, the same CPU.

Obviously, the warranty and official VIX support would be far superior than the ZGemma but I didn't/haven't really had an issue with the OpenVIX images.

Thanks guys.

I have the H5.2TC and it's a great budget box - more than capable of doing everything it's meant for. It has a single satellite tuner and a twin cable tuner (hybrid) which means only 1 cable feed into the box is needed.

I use Wooshbuild on mine which utilises ATV 6 and I haven't encountered any problems with it yet.

Cheers for the reply.

I've tried Wooshbuild in the past and encountered a few crashes on my H.2S but it was mainly 99% stable so it's not really a bother. I'm tempted to just go for the ZGemma but with some reports in the past of the power adapter being a fire hazard, i've been moving away from them.

The recent thread I was looking at (http://www.techkings.org/threads/edision-os-mini-plus-or-zgemma-h5.116969/) everyone seemed to recommend the Edison over the ZGemma but the sales of the ZGemma were considerably higher. As below, I'm not too fussed about recording. The only other thing that draws me to the Edison is the built-in Wi-Fi/Bluetooth (A cheap adapter would be fine but even better if built in, freeing a USB port) and official OpenVIX support, so I can just update via the box. I know Zgemma now have official ATV/PLI support but there's something about VIX I prefer, for some reason haha.

do you want to record on cable box then a twin cable tuner is needed.

Recording isn't something I'm too bothered about so either or I guess would be grand.

if you like openvix then you get a genuine supported box by them.be surprised how many want the ability to record and later say next box will have more than 1 tuner.

That's the way I'm thinking.

I mean we currently have a H.2S which is a twin Sat tuner and we've yet to use it and record. We even have a TiVO box from Virmin and don't even use it for recording haha.

I think the issue about the power adaptor hasn't come up in a long time and don't personally that have had an issue with it, they did used to come with 2 pin plugs and an adaptor but now come with a UK 3 pin.

One thing to note, if you get a twin cable tuner box, you can keep your H2S as a multi room box that uses the second tuner from the cable box, the only connection it would need is to your router.

I've never used an Edison but there are plenty of users on here with both boxes so getting help if you have an issue isn't going to be a problem.

Yeah I think it's settled now, I couldn't understand anywho as my boxes always came with a UK power adapter - weird, huh?

Anyway, I've taken the plunge on another ZGemma box. Just need to find a line provider now.

As for the H2S, I'm either planning to sell it (probably useless considering they're around £50/£60 to buy) or use the remainder of our subscription in another room. I was going to use it for IPTV but from what I've read a HEVC device would be far better and I've heard some zapping issues such as slowness etc.

Thanks for the advice nonetheless :)

You can use the H2S as a multiroom box using a tuner on the cable box. edit: sorry already mentioned this earlier.

Openvix isn't officially supported by zgemma but you can get a patched openvix image which works fine on the zgemma h5.2tc

Indeed, we currently use this on a H.2S but on the official ZGemma updates page, no OpenVIX image is provided?

I don't know I've asked zgemma but don't get anywhere. But people are using the openvix h5 image on the h5.2tc and it works. The only difference with the boxes is the extra tuners on the h5.2tc

Openvix don't support Zgemma boxes. They never have.
Their images get patched to run on Zgemma boxes
which they weren't happy about.

You are probably better off using OpenATV with Zgemma
or if you want Openvix buy a box which they officially support.

Indeed, I'm aware of this. The patched images work fine for me but official support would be great. Ah well, I think I'm going to use Wooshbuild which is based on OpenATV AFAIK.

Or you can try Openpli, openspa, openatv, egami, hdfreaks

I've tried these but I still settle with OpenVIX purely because of the built in AutoBoquetsMaker and Softcam support built in.

Openpli 6 on initial boot up it will install your choice of softcam and comes up with plugins on setup to install autobouqetmaker
