power levels

No idea what any of this means but I'm getting a lot of issues that I originally thought were caused by a shit line but I'm starting to think may be my signal strength?

As I say this means nothing to me, but I've got this from the downstream section on my superhub.

Do I need a signal booster?

These are low but Virmin will probably say they are within their tolerance limits. I would phone them up and see if they can increase them. Also if you have any attenuators attached going into the super hub I would remove them.

I don’t have them into the super hub but I do have one in another room (which they fitted when they did the install). Though that is the box that’s having the most trouble with freezing.

At the moment there’s one upstairs and the super hub, which share a split cable, and one downstairs.

Would it be worth giving them some story about how YouTube keeps dropping out or something so they might come and increase my signal?

Is there by any chance another splitter inside your omni box outside your property that could be weakening the signal

Not sure to be honest, never thought to look. I know it will be split at least once because I had them put in feeds on two floors.

Reason i ask i had the same problem basically the line had too many splits in it and was lowering power levels etc worth a look

I had a 2 way splitter inside omni outside 1 feed through wall to downstairs tivo box and the 2nd feed ran round the outside of house to rear bedroom which had another splitter 1 feed into modem and other into my v8 golden etc when i disconnected the splitter upstairs and just fed the modem power levels were within tolerence so all i did was do away with the 2 way splitter in omni box and replace with a 3 way splitter and ran an extra cable to upstairs straight into v8 golden to eliminate that splitter etc didnt increase power that much but did the trick and no more issues but i know some people in heavily subscribed areas have to use a powered splitter to overcome this problem and probably cant get on top tier of cabinet on street etc hope this makes sense to you :(y):

It does, I see what you’re saying. Hopefully won’t be too dark by the time I get back to sort anything tonight.

Haven’t had chance to crack open the box as some bushes have grown around it since the install [emoji45] but it only really seems to freeze on HD channels, so I’m fairly sure based on that that it’s likely to be the cabling.

I posted on the virgin forum about ‘internet’ problems and a guy on there says I could do with a smaller spread in the figures I posted so maybe it is signal.

Ah, since had another reply. My upstream levels are too high apparently. Just waiting on staff to get in touch on the forum - probably be tomorrow now.

Yeah could well be degraded cables if you get chance try a direct feed to box etc outside splitters seem to be culprits most of the time simply being out in the elements even tho they housed inside a casing they do pack up sometimes etc virmin only seem to do installs just inside tolerance levels, so when you add an extra box they go out of tolerance it dont take much to interfere with your equiptment performance etc :(y):

Weird thing is, it’s the one that goes directly through the wall and isn’t split again (as opposed to the one they’ve looped right round my house - the other feed they put in is in an upstairs bedroom at the back, and that one is split between a box and a router) that’s dodgy. I was absolutely convinced my server was just shite but then I noticed that along with normal freezing I was getting pixelation as well with some test lines which you’d obviously associate with signal strength.

I mean my server may still be shite... but if I can at least eliminate a hardware problem then it’ll help.

-6 is usually about the lowest to be within range and a few of yours are a bit lower than that, even those that aren't are hovering near -5.9.
Once they adjust the signal your line should clear ok

Yeah i know what ya mean its so frustrating trying to narrow it down to one particular area but thats does seem strange its normally the other way round and the line with the splitter causing the issues

Have you tried disconnecting a box and then looking at your levels ?

Yeah I’m hoping they can get something sorted soon as it’s really irritating now. Especially annoying that there’s nothing I can do myself.

That’s a good shout. Will have to wait until late at night to try that though or I’ll be in the dog house... [emoji23]

Story I gave on the virgin forum was shite internet, not sure how I’ll explain it if they do come and that sorts it. [emoji23]

The power levels reported on the router will not change by disconnecting a box. The power levels reported on the router is the power coming in from your green cabinet. The power levels drop after you start adding splitters internally with the router and this will not show on the router.

Hello, i had the exact same problem, unfortunately VM will just fob you of as they’ll say your power levels are adequate. I got recommended to purchase a technetix hdu signal booster and this resolved all my problems. I had 2 boxes running of it & BB. All the glitching, freezing stopped & power levels went to normal.
