Help needed please?

Hi guys, I have decided on the combo box to get but just waiting for funds.

I did have a few questions before getting it.

1. Been told by few people you need both vermin TV and broadband to get cable is that true as I thought you just needed one or the other?

2. Also what are the main connectors I need and where's the best place to get them?

3. I have one live cable and that's it, so been told I have to split it, I'm completely new to the cable side and to splitting. How exactly would I split it and what type of splitter do I need? Is there a tutorial for this? I'm worried I might end up damaging the cable itself.

You dont NEED the internet or tv, just an active line. But if you get the internet at least you know your line will always be live.

If you dont get the internet the only reason you will need a splitter is to extend the cable connection from your wall to wherever your box is, you can get a 2 or 3 way f type splitter and you can record then . You can get them cheap, check world of satellite shop or fleabay.

To connect the f type lnb connector to your cable connection you will need a male coax to f type connector, again, very cheap from either of the above mentioned places

splitter looks like this......

and the connector looks like this....

I just have internet so it is a live line I assume.

Even though I have internet, do I still need a splitter?

Also is there a specific 2 or 3 f type splitter I need and is there specific one for combo boxes?

Where does the male coax to f type connector fit?

Thanks for the help. I'm just confused about these connectors snd splitters and how to fit them and how to split the cable. Want to know how to do this before combo box arrives.

Which combo box did you decide on @channelking?

Gigablue.

Was considering miraclebox but it's expensive.

...Even though I have internet, do I still need a splitter?...

You need to split your cable feed so that one goes to your router and one goes to the gigablue box.

But is there no tutorial on how to split the coaxial cable in to two? I have no idea how to do it and am worried I might mess things up.

Sat is not hard to set up, but seems with the connectors, splitters its really hard to setup cable.

I hope people who have done this with their combo box can give me some reassurance.

You just need to buy a 2 way splitter like this one:-

5-2400MHz 2 Way TV Satellite Cable Splitter Antenna Signal for Sky Virgin Media | eBay

...and 2 extra cables. From crmorris2's post, it looks like the Gigablue uses a Belling Lee (TV type) connector for the cable input. So you will need an F type to Belling Lee (TV type) lead for the Gigablue:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-5M-Metr...ion_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item51bc5dc1cf

and an F type to F type for the router.

You could also do what crmorris2 says & use another F type to F type lead for the Gigablue, & use an adaptor on the end:-

F to Belling Lee Adaptor - suit Virgin/Sky/Cable TV | eBay

The cable that currently goes to your router connects to the IN port on the splitter. You then need to connect one of the OUT ports on the splitter to your router, & the other OUT port connects to the Gigablue box.

Im confused now.

What extra 2 cables do I need and what is belling lee connector?

Im sorry for these questions but I am really confused.

I thought all I needed was a splitter and a male coax to f type connector?

So I dont actually split the white coaxial cable that is running?

Again apologies for these questions but im new to splitters and the connectors mentioned in terms of the cable side.

Splitting the cable on the "cable" side is the same as splitting the cable on the "sat" side
which you already know about.

There is no difference.

You will just need the F to Ariel connector to connect to your box.

What do you mean by splitting the cable on the sat side, what are you referring to?

I thought you meant just to split the cable on the cable side?

Belling Lee is just another name for a coax TV aerial type connector.

You currently only have 1 cable connected to your router. That cable needs to be unscrewed from the router & connected to the IN port of the 2 way splitter. As I said above, you now need to connect one of the OUT ports on the splitter back up to your router so that you still have an internet connection. The other OUT port connects to your Gigablue box. That's why you need 2 more leads.

Sorry mate, I really can't add to this.

If you don't get this then I would seriously think about cancelling your order for the box.

Ye thank you for the help and everyone who has helped me. I understand the process now.

In terms of the extra coaxial leads are there all the same or is one better than the other?

Also after extensive research I have read people saying after using a splitter to get more than one signal that you get signal loss and poor picture quality. Is this at all true?

I have also read the quality on Slys HD channels is slightly better than vermins is that true?

I know we don't. I meant when sly HD was working was there much difference between it and vermin HD?

Also if after using a splitter to get more than one signal do you get signal loss and poor picture quality?

@ cactikid, I am just asking a question, please don't mock me.

not mocking you m8 but people are still clueless on whats going on and still asking about hd and said we cannot get it on 28.2,sat hd will always be better than cable anytime .yes the more splitters you have the weaker the signal, other posts stating amiko and hd pixelation on weak signal and miraclebox perfect, its all in the quality.

how many tuners has gigablue got

You can buy the same model as single sat, twin sat or one sat one cable, so up to two tuners.

This seller on Ebay does the complete kit:-

2 Way Splitter Kit Cable TV Starview NTL Virgin DBox2 | eBay

There will be some signal loss through the splitter & extra cables. The quality of most of the cheaper ready-made cables isn't that good. They don't use the best cable, often using RG59, but how well they work depends on the signal strength you have coming into your home. In fact some members have too much signal strength & have to use attenuators.

There's no way of knowing until you try it.

I have a reel of FT100 cable that I use to make up my own lengths of leads. It's always seemed good enough for my needs, but some purists will scoff at that these days!
