16 gig Nvidia Shield or 500 gig nvidia shield?

Hi if I add a external hard drive to a 16 gig Nvidia shield will it be as fast as a 500 gig version or will the internal drive make the 500 gig quicker?

An hard drive will only extend the storage, can't see how it would make it any faster

Sorry what I meant was if I brought a 16 gig shield and added a 500 gig external hard drive would it perform the same as the 500 gig shield.
